Poverty is a serious global issue that needs to be eradicated, as it is the root of many other global concerns, such as lack of education, terrorism, world hunger, and diseases. According to Poverty Introduction, “Over one-fifth of the world’s population lives in poverty” ("Poverty Introduction”). As you can see, so much people from all over the world suffer from things that seldom reach us. As the article Education and Poverty: a Gender Analysis states, “Those with no education tend to have earning profiles which remain pretty flat throughout their lives” (Oxaal). Can you see how important having an education is? Without any schooling, it will be impossible for people to find jobs. It will also harm them by preventing them to learn about reproduction safety and other ways to prevent other diseases. Starvation is also one of the main problems as Facts about Hunger says, “Six million children under the age of 5 die every year as a result of hunger!” (“Facts about Hunger”). In the following, you will learn more about poverty and its hazardousness.
Poverty usually happens when diseases kill able adults breaking off a family’s main income. Without income, children cannot go to school and will not find a good job. Farm production will go down causing a lack of food. Without money, more diseases will come to the family because of the low supplies and thus turning this into a poverty cycle. It can also be caused by wars, insufficient amount of jobs, and various other reasons. According to the Article The Challenge for UN in a Globalizing World, “20 of the world’s 38 poorest countries are either in the midst of an armed conflict or have only recently emerged from it” (Clare). This tells us how poor countries are far more likely to be involved in war and terrorism than rich ones. “What do we have to lose even if we are defeated?” or “If I have to live in such conditions, I’d rather die,” may be the way many warring countries and terrorists think. Countries may also be fighting for resources and equality,
while terrorists may be persuaded with a promise of food and shelter. This is both a cause of poverty and a result of poverty. According to Facts about Hunger, “Malnutrition can severely affect a child's intellectual development. Malnourished children often have stunted growth and score significantly lower on math and language achievement tests than do well-nourished children” (“Facts about Hunger”). This also shows us the awful effects of poverty and how poverty can influence a country’s development indirectly by affecting the next generation’s growth. According to World Hunger and Poverty, “Meaningful long-term alleviation to hunger is rooted in the alleviation of poverty, as poverty leads to hunger” (Shah). So in order to save these poor people from starvation, we must stop poverty first. Many diseases such as Malaria and AIDS are also caused by poverty because poor people cannot get education on how to avoid the illness and cannot get supplies to prevent the diseases either. Most importantly there is the lack of education. According to Vital Statistics, “Nearly 1 billion people are illiterate” (“Vital Statistics”). That means nearly 1 billion people cannot help their countries to develop. It also causes most of the other problems such as diseases, unemployment, and hunger, which are at the same time, causes of poverty. Therefore, we can conclude that all these main problems can both be roots and consequences of poverty.

Poverty affects the world and is a global issue because not only is one region affected it affects the whole world. Poverty causes people in this world to have to be diseased due to their lack of money to pay medical bills, which also causes disease to spread easier in countries. Poverty causes people to have to live in substandard housing. They work extremely hard every day and only get paid around 1-2 dollars and sometimes even less. Poverty affects the world because the poor take up a majority of the population of the world and causes children to be uneducated and have to grow up with no real future. Poverty also encourages war because poor countries have nothing to lose even if they are defeated. They also fight for resources and equality. Terrorism is caused by poverty as well because people are often convinced to become terrorists with a promise of food and shelter. That is why Poverty affects the world. What is being Done?
Free education, loans, and charities are being done to help reduce poverty. Free education made a huge difference, as it helped enrolled millions in Malawi. Job opportunities were improved, and a brighter future for many people. Friends of Alouette International are giving educational support to students in need in the Philippines, India, and victims of Hurricane Katrina. This organization has succeeded in donating “all the necessities for 150 street children to attend school.” People under poverty cannot afford many necessities; this is why loaning takes place. The Grameen Bank was the first main micro credit plan. In present, it loans approximately $190 million per year to 2.4 million people! Another organization called Kiva allows others to pick a specific person to loan money to, and in some time, that person will pay the dept. However, loaning isn’t the best method to reduce poverty, because often people have issues with paying back the money. If not, there are always donations to help the unprivileged. Hunger is caused by poverty, and Freedom from Hunger helps solve this. “Freedom from Hunger is the only anti-hunger organization exclusively dedicated to helping families feed themselves permanently.” They use donations from sponsors to support women under poverty by building home-based businesses, education on nutrition, and health. Thanks to these and other organizations, world poverty is a step closer to becoming history. (Picture from http://kiva.org/app.php?gclid=CNHZoYz3iZECFRYoewod1lE4_A)
